Faith and Fear in Uganda
Children gather in Gulu, Northern Uganda. They flee the villages in the late afternoon to avoid abduction and death at the hands of Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) up to 25,000 children sleep outside in Gulu town each evening. Nearly 9000 children have been abducted in the past 12 months. After sleeping the night outside in the wet, cold, open-air bus station they rise at 4am to start the 10-20km walk back to their villages. 2003

Local defense forces have been mobilized to try to aid the government forces in rural areas. They are mostly ex-rebels who have returned home. With old weapons and no uniforms or pay they provide protection against the LRA in villages throughout the country. 2003

Government forces have been fighting the LRA for seventeen years. With limited funding and ancient weaponry their effectiveness is limited. 2003
